The City Council is an elected public body that typically meets the first Tuesday of the month for work sessions to discuss issues and develop consensus; however, no formal action may be taken.  Work sessions begin at 7 p.m. and are held in the Work Session Room, located in Room 111 of the City Hall Annex, 10455 Armstrong Street.

The City Council typically meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month for regular meetings for public hearings and action items and to allow for public comment.  Council meetings begin at 7 p.m. and are held in Council Chambers located in Room 100 of the City Hall Annex.

The City School Board is an elected public body that typically meets on the  first Monday of the month for regular meeting action item and public comment.  City School Board meetings begin at 7:30 p.m. and are held in Council Chambers located in Room 100 of the City Hall Annex, 10455 Armstrong Street.

The City School Board typically meets on the third Monday of the month for work sessions to discuss issues and develop consensus.  Work sessions are held at Fairfax High School, 3501 Rebel Run.

Board of Architectural Review
Meets on the first and third Wednesdays of the month at 7 p.m., City Hall Annex, Council Chambers Room 100.  7 members; 3-year term.

Board of Building Code Appeals
Meets as needed, location TBD.  7 members; 5-year term.
The board of building code appeals shall act on applications for appeals from building official decisions based on the provisions of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code which relate to the technical aspects of building maintenance regulations and to all of the other provisions of such code.  Meets as needed.

Board of Equalization of Real Estate Assessments
Meets as needed, typically from September through December, City Hall.  3 members, 1 alternate; 3-year term, 9 year total limit.
Hears appeals of assessed value of real estate. Court appointed.  

Board of Zoning Appeals
Meets the first Tuesday of the month, 7 p.m., City Hall Annex, Council Chambers Room 100.  5 members; 5-year term.

Commission for Women
Meets the third Tuesday of the month, 7 p.m., City Hall.  9 members; 3-year term.
Identifies and advocates for the needs of women in the city. Promotes programs to increase awareness and provide services to the community. Open to men and women.

Commission on the Arts
Meets on the third Tuesday of the month,  7 p.m., Stacy C. Sherwood Community Center. 15 members; 3-year term.

Community Appearance Committee
Meets on the fourth Thursday of the month, 7 p.m., City Hall.  10 members; 3-year term.
Coordinates the city's Adopt-a-Spot program and clean-up month/day programs, in addition to commercial, residential and holiday decoration award programs.

Economic Development Authority
Meets on the third Wednesday of the month, 6 p.m., City Hall Annex, Work Session Room 111.  7 members; 4-year term.
Fosters and promotes economic development and redevelopment in the City of Fairfax in harmony with the proper balance of commercial and residential enterprise and in alignment with the future needs of the community.

Electoral Board
Meets as needed; City Hall Annex, 3rd Floor, Suite 300.  3 members; 3-year staggered terms, nominated by political parties and appointed by the Circuit Court with the majority of the board reflecting the party of the current Virginia governor.
Ensures elections are conducted in an honest, fair and accurate manner. Appoints the General Registrar/Director of Elections and the Officers of Election.

Environmental Sustainability Committee
Meets the third Wednesday of every month, 7 p.m., City Hall Annex, Work Session Room 111.  9 members; 2-year term.
Serves in an advisory role to the City Council and all Boards and Commissions on environmental and energy conservation issues.

Historic Fairfax City, Inc.
Meets the second Wednesday of every month, 7 p.m., Blenheim Interpretive Center.  5 Council-appointed members; 5-year term.
A non-profit organization that promotes and encourages appreciation for and preservation of the city's history and artifacts. Works in cooperation with the Office of Historic Resources. Five members of the Board of Directors are appointed by the City Council.

Human Services Committee
Meets the fourth Monday of the month in January, April, July and October, 7 p.m., City Hall.  12 members; terms coincide with term on regional board.
Offers forum for city's representatives to regional boards and commissions. Addresses emerging trends and unmet human services needs in the City of Fairfax.

Parks and Recreation Advisory Board
Meets the second Thursday of the month, 7 p.m.,  City Hall Annex, Work Session Room 111.  13 members; 3-year term.
Serves in an advisory role to the City Council and makes recommendations on park and recreation facilities and programs.

Personnel Advisory Board
Meets as needed, City Hall.  3 members, 2 alternates; 3-year term.

Planning Commission

Serves in an advisory capacity to the city council and plans for the future development of the city. Prepares and reviews the Comprehensive Plan; reviews subdivision and site plan submission; and makes recommendations to city council on Capital Improvement Program, rezonings and text amendments.

Meets quarterly, 7 p.m., Conference Room 7, Fairfax County Govt. Center.  15 members; 3-year term.
Sets program policies and serves as directorate for the local programs within the local Alcohol Safety Action Program.


Meets the second Monday of the month, 7:30 p.m., Conference Rooms 2/3 of the Fairfax County  Govt. Center.  15 members; 3-year term.

Meets the third Wednesday of the month, 12 p.m.,.  12 members; 2-year term.
Informs the community of the needs of the elderly and makes legislative and budgetary recommendations to the Board of Supervisors on issues faced by the elderly.

Meets the second Thursday of month, 7 p.m., (no meeting in July or August), location TBD.  17 members; 2-year term.
Advises and cooperates with the court upon all matters affecting the working of laws relating to children, their care and protection, and to domestic relations.

The Fairfax Community Criminal Justice Board (CCJB)
Meets the fourth Thursday of the month, 8 a.m.,  fifth floor Circuit Court jury assembly area of the Fairfax County Courthouse.  24 members; term at-pleasure.
Enhances the ability of Fairfax County and City of Fairfax to develop court services, community- based corrections programs, juvenile accountability and other criminal justice programs.


Meets the second Wednesday of every month, 7 p.m., George Mason Regional Library meeting room.  12 members; 4-year term.
To establish and enact policies, and approve annual budget for library services to be submitted to appropriate governing body, and to select and appoint Director of Public Libraries.


Meets fourth Wednesday of the month, 7:30 p.m., Fairfax County Govt Center.  16 members; 3-year term, 3 term limit.
Oversees the mental-health, intellectual and developmental disability and substance use disorder services of the cities of Fairfax and Falls Church and Fairfax County.


Meets the second Monday of the month, 8 p.m., near Falls Church.  10 members; 3-year term, 2 term limit.
Plans for the health-care needs of the area and works with other regional groups on health-care issues.

Northern Virginia Community College Board
Meets every other month.  1 city member; 4-year term, 2 term limit.
Performs such duties with respect to the operation of a community college as may be delegated to it by the State Board for Community Colleges within the statewide policies, procedures and regulations.

Northern Virginia Workforce Investment Board
Contact the Board for meeting times and locations.  42 members; 4-year term.
Determines the procedures for development of job training programs and selects grant recipients and administrative entities.

NOVA Parks
Meets the third Thursday of the month, NVRPA Headquarters.  13 members; 4-year term.
